The Women’s Right to Vote - Through Artistic Expression

The 5th District Democratic Women’s Club to Launch “VOTE” Art Competition

On August 18, 2020, the 5th District Democratic Women’s Club will launch a “VOTE” Art Competition, to commemorate two remarkable events that occurred on that date 100 years ago:  The ratification of the 19th Amendment, the Women’s Right to Vote and the birth of beloved activist and founder of the 5th District Democratic Women’s Club, “Dutch” Newman.

“Dutch” Newman believed the RIGHT TO VOTE is one of the most cherished principles of American Democracy.  This contest is a reminder to GET OUT AND VOTE and to NEVER take that privilege for granted.

PLEASE help us contact local artists to participate.  We have five outstanding judges who each bring credibility and prestige to this event: Branden Haralson, Karen Holland, Lonnie Powell, Pamela Sahl and Alicia Gambino.

All entries must include the word “VOTE” with a 24"W x 13"H horizontal design.  The winning entry will receive an award of $1000.  In addition, their work will be displayed on hundreds of yard signs throughout the community.  Entries will be accepted from August 18, 2020 thru September 18, 2020.

This “VOTE” Art Competition gives local artists the platform to bring to life a historic moment in time.  We’re excited to connect the women’s movement of 1920 to the voter awareness of today!
